What happened

In February 2026, investment accounts in Trump’s name bought between $1 million and $5 million of Dell Technologies stock, then bought more in March. The trades appear on periodic transaction reports he filed with the Office of Government Ethics on May 14, 2026, which list more than 3,600 trades in the first quarter. Nine days after the February purchase, at an event in Georgia celebrating Michael Dell’s $6.25 billion pledge to the government’s “Trump Accounts” program, Trump told the crowd, “Go out and buy a Dell computer.” He said it again at the White House in early May.

On May 27, 2026, the Department of War announced that Dell Federal Systems had won a five-year agreement valued at about $9.69 billion. It covers the Pentagon’s Microsoft licenses and cloud subscriptions, across the military, intelligence agencies and the Coast Guard. The department said the competition was open and the deal would save $422 million a year. Dell’s stock rose about 5% the next morning. The Trump Organization said outside managers make the trades and that Trump does not direct them.

Who benefited

Trump’s Dell shares gained value on a contract his own department awarded. Michael Dell’s company won the largest software-licensing deal in the Pentagon’s history while its founder served on the president’s science council. He had just made the largest private gift to a Trump program.

Who wanted something

Dell had spent a year aligning with the administration. It pledged $6.25 billion in December 2025, appeared at the White House and holds an advisory seat. Whether that bought the contract cannot be shown from the outside. The president held the stock while the contract was decided.

Who lost out

You paid, and the president is exempt from the conflict-of-interest law that applies to every other federal employee. He has not sold his stocks or put them in a blind trust. When the Pentagon spends $9.7 billion with a company he owns a piece of, no rule stops it and there is no way to know whether it mattered.

Why it matters

The site’s other trading records are about buying or selling just before an announcement. This one is about a president holding a stock while the government he runs awards its owner $9.7 billion. The contract may be sound. The arrangement that let him profit from it is the receipt.
