What happened

After January 6, 2021, Meta suspended Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, and Trump sued in 2021. Zuckerberg dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November 2024, Trump raised the lawsuit, and about two months of talks followed. Meta had also given $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee.

On January 29, 2025, nine days into his term, Trump signed the settlement at the White House. Meta agreed to pay roughly $25 million: $22 million to a fund for his future presidential library and about $3 million for legal fees and other plaintiffs. Meta admitted no wrongdoing.

Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure, released June 30, 2026, shows Meta, ABC and Paramount paid a combined $56.5 million to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation, consistent with a $24.5 million Meta payment. The original recipient, the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Fund, was administratively dissolved by Florida in September 2025 after failing to file an annual report. A second nonprofit with the same purpose was incorporated in May 2025.

Who benefited

Trump’s presidential library fund and its successor foundation, which he controls, received the Meta payment, recorded on his 2025 disclosure at $24.5 million. Because the money went to the foundation rather than to Trump personally, this record does not count it in his personal take.

Who wanted something

Meta faced an FTC antitrust trial and other regulatory matters before the federal government Trump now headed when it signed. Meta’s letter to the court described the $22 million as a donation to the library.

Who lost out

Meta’s shareholders paid about $25 million. A company with matters before the government paid into a fund controlled by the president, there was no finding that Meta did anything wrong, and the fund that received the money has since been dissolved. Senators Warren and Blumenthal say the foundation’s own filings show up to $14.5 million unaccounted for and about $7 million in unexplained spending.

Why it matters

A company with antitrust and regulatory matters before the government paid about $25 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the president, with $22 million going to a fund he controls. The agreement was signed inside the White House. Where that money sits today is not publicly known.
