Musk’s X pays Trump $8 million to settle his account-ban lawsuit while Musk runs DOGE
Trump sued Twitter over his suspension after January 6. In February 2025, with Musk heading the Department of Government Efficiency inside Trump’s government, X agreed to settle. Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure lists $8 million from X Corp.
What happened
Twitter suspended Trump’s account after January 6, 2021, and he sued the company and its chief executive that July. By the time the case was resolved, Twitter had become X and belonged to Elon Musk, who had spent heavily to elect Trump and was running the Department of Government Efficiency, the cost-cutting operation inside the new administration.
On February 12, 2025, the Wall Street Journal reported that X had agreed to pay about $10 million to end the suit, and the Associated Press confirmed the figure. Terms were confidential; some of the money was expected to cover legal fees, with the rest going to Trump’s future presidential library.
Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure records $8 million from X Corp as a legal settlement. Unlike the ABC, CBS, Meta and Alphabet settlements listed beside it, each annotated as paid to the library foundation or the Trust for the National Mall, the X line carries no such note. In July 2026 three congressional Democrats asked the library foundation to account for up to $21.5 million in settlement money from X, Meta, ABC and Paramount that they said was missing or unexplained.
Who benefited
Trump’s disclosure records $8 million from X for a lawsuit over a suspension that ended in 2022. Whether the money reached him, his lawyers or the library foundation is not documented on the form. The record counts it in the family’s cash.
Who wanted something
Elon Musk’s companies hold billions of dollars in federal contracts and answer to federal regulators. When X settled he held a position inside the administration with reach across agencies.
Who lost out
No taxpayer money was involved; X paid. The cost falls on anyone depending on DOGE’s decisions about agencies, contracts and staff, which were being made by someone who was at the same time paying the president to end a personal lawsuit.
Why it matters
A company paid the president to end his personal lawsuit while its owner held a government role. The reported price was $10 million; the president’s own form says $8 million and does not say where it went. Congress is asking.
