Trump’s $800M WLFI stake enters a vesting contract that unlocks in 2028
On May 19, 2026, six wallets holding World Liberty Financial’s insider tokens moved 30 billion WLFI into a vesting contract. One wallet matches the 14.175 billion tokens disclosed as President Trump’s, worth about $800 million. The tokens cannot be sold before May 2028.
What happened
When World Liberty Financial’s WLFI token launched, the founders’ tokens were locked with no date for release. World Liberty is the Trump family’s crypto company. The project’s disclosures list a founder allocation of 14.175 billion tokens for Trump.
On May 19, 2026, six wallets holding World Liberty’s insider allocation moved 30 billion WLFI into a new vesting contract, CoinDesk reported on September 14 from blockchain data. The rules required 10% of the tokens to be burned on entry. The largest wallet deposited 15.75 billion WLFI and kept 14.175 billion, matching Trump’s disclosed allocation. The Washington Sun first reported the move and counted four wallets; CoinDesk counted six.
Under the contract the tokens unlock after a two-year cliff, in May 2028, followed by three years of linear release. A governance vote of about 11,537 wallets created the schedule, and World Liberty says joining was optional; founders who declined stay locked indefinitely. CoinDesk could not identify the owners of the other five wallets from blockchain data alone.
Who benefited
Trump’s tokens now have a date on which they can become money. CoinDesk valued the Trump-matching stake at about $800 million. Until now the founders’ tokens had no timetable for sale. The family had already taken more than $500 million from the project through token sales to outside buyers, according to Trump’s 2025 disclosure.
Who wanted something
World Liberty’s founders took the option to swap an indefinite lockup for a dated one. A World Liberty spokesman said the founders accepted the strictest terms of any token holder, including the burn and the longest vesting schedule. The record does not show who else, among the other five wallets, took the deal.
Who lost out
No public money is in this record. The vesting contract is now the largest single holder of WLFI, with 46.1 billion tokens, just under half of all WLFI in existence. Other holders share a token whose largest stake now has a defined unlock date. The record does not say what a sale would do to the price.
Why it matters
Until now this record of World Liberty Financial has been about money coming in: Gulf investors, token sales, stablecoin deals. This is the first dated act that points toward money going out, to the president, from a product he promoted while in office. The unlock date, May 2028, falls after the midterms and before the end of his term.
