Trump calls Democrats “hard core, godless Communists” after New York primaries and tells a conservative conference they “will kill your people”
No self-identified communists had been elected, and the posts named no candidates. The remarks followed left-wing wins in New York City Democratic primaries.
What happened
On the night of June 25, 2026, after left-wing candidates won New York City Democratic primaries, Trump posted on Truth Social: “These are not social Dumocrats, these are hard core, godless Communists.” He referred to a “recent Election of Communists in our Country.”
In companion posts Trump wrote “The Communists are finally making their move” and “The game is on.” The posts named no candidates. No self-identified communists had been elected in the primaries Trump was describing, which were won by left-wing candidates in New York City.
On June 26, Trump told the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in Washington that “they will close your churches in this country” and “they will kill your people.” The audience was a gathering of social conservatives.
Who benefited
Trump used the New York results to cast the Democratic Party, rather than any named candidate, as communist. The posts and the conference speech put that label in front of both his social-media audience and the Faith & Freedom Coalition.
Who wanted something
Trump made the posts and delivered the speech himself. What he got was a frame, communist and godless, to apply to the opposition party as a whole after the New York primaries, in his own words on Truth Social and at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference.
Who lost out
The Democratic Party’s voters, and the candidates who won the New York City primaries, were labeled communists by the president. The posts named no candidates, and no self-identified communists had been elected. The label was applied to the party as a whole, in public, by the president.
Why it matters
The president applied a label for a hostile ideology to the main opposition party and said its members “will kill your people.” The posts and speech made no reference to any specific act or candidate. They were words rather than an order, and nothing in the record shows an enforcement step.
