Nine major law firms pledge nearly $1B in free work to Trump administration
In total, nine of the country's largest law firms reached settlements pledging almost $1 billion in pro bono legal services to causes favored by the Trump administration, after being threatened with executive orders that would have barred them from federal work.
What happened
Congressional Democrats, including Sens. Blumenthal and Schiff and Rep. Raskin, sent letters to the firms questioning the legality and terms of the arrangements, noting firms had no written contracts documenting the commitments despite their unprecedented scale.
Why it matters
The firms are providing services of substantial economic value directly benefiting administration-selected causes, extracted under threat of retaliatory executive orders rather than through any legitimate legal or contractual process — raising serious separation-of-powers and coercion concerns.
