Trump freezes $2.2 billion in Harvard research funding
The administration freezes more than $2.2 billion in federal research funding to Harvard, citing the university's handling of campus antisemitism under Title VI. The freeze halts support for more than 900 research projects.
What happened
A government lawyer told the court in July that the funding was frozen because Harvard had violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by failing to address antisemitism on campus. Judge Allison Burroughs later found the money was frozen “without any sort of investigation into whether particular labs were engaging in antisemitic behavior.”
Why it matters
Research money is the lever the federal government holds over a university. Withdrawing it without an investigation, and restoring it only on terms, turns funding into a compliance instrument rather than a grant programme.
