DOJ orders prosecutors in seven states to prepare Soros-foundation probes
A senior official in Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche's office directs U.S. attorney's offices in at least seven states to prepare investigations of the Open Society Foundations, listing potential charges from material support for terrorism to arson, wire fraud and racketeering. The foundations say they “unequivocally condemn terrorism and do not fund terrorism.”
What happened
The order came from Aakash Singh and went to offices including California, New York, Illinois, Michigan and Maryland. It followed Trump and Vice President JD Vance singling out George Soros publicly, with Trump saying in a Fox News interview that Soros should be investigated for racketeering. The directive predates NSPM-7 by three days and the Justice Department memo implementing it by more than two months.
Why it matters
Prosecutorial discretion is supposed to run from evidence to charges. Here the instruction runs the other way—from a named target down to a list of statutes that might be made to fit—and it is issued centrally to offices across the country at once.
