Trump converts the first 8,000 civil servants to fire-at-will
Executive order converts nearly 8,000 civil-service positions to at-will status.
What happened
The administration had initially estimated 50,000 workers would be moved into the new Schedule Policy/Career category; this first tranche covers nearly 8,000. The category was formally established by the Office of Personnel Management earlier in the year.
Why it matters
Career protections are the reason the guardrails held at all in 2017–2020: an official could refuse an illegal order and keep their job. Strip that, and the executive branch is staffed by people who serve at Trump's pleasure and know it. A workforce that can be fired for hesitating will not hesitate—exactly what a president needs if he plans to lean on investigations, election administration, or certification around November.
