The House passes the Save America Act by folding it into a spending bill
The House of Representatives passed the Save America Act by attaching it to a bill authorizing spending by the state department and related agencies, approving the combined measure by 217 to 209.
What happened
The Save America Act would ban mail-in ballots and impose new identification requirements on voters when they register and cast ballots. Speaker Mike Johnson agreed to the plan to combine it with the appropriations bill after rightwing House Republicans insisted the measure be made a priority. The House had approved a version of the bill in February, but it has no path through the Senate, where top Democrats oppose it and can wield the filibuster.
Why it matters
Attaching a voting bill to an appropriations measure changes the question from whether the votes exist for the voting bill to whether the government stays funded without it.
