The State Department names American activists Cuban 'front groups and fellow travelers'
The State Department released a 100-page report listing named American activists and organizations as "front groups and fellow travelers" for Cuba, among them Hasan Piker and Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls.
What happened
The report denounces Cuba as the "capital of 21st-century communism" and accuses the Cuban government of a "campaign of subversion" that has "infiltrated the highest reaches of the US government, recruited and cultivated generations of American activists [and] backed an unprecedented wave of leftwing terrorism on American soil." It singles out the Democratic Socialists of America, Isra Hirsi, New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani and journalist Amy Goodman, citing their criticism of US policy toward Cuba or participation in Cuba solidarity movements.
Why it matters
A published State Department designation attaches a foreign-subversion framing to named Americans, including a sitting mayor and a working journalist, on the basis of their stated political positions.
