What happened

Early on October 12, 2026, Homeland Security Investigations agents searched the Washington, D.C.-area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat. The Justice Department said the agents “executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice” and that “this enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” It gave no other details.

The department has not said what it is investigating, and no charges have been announced. Fox News, citing unnamed sources, reported that the investigation concerns immigration paperwork Omar’s late father completed when she was a child. The Associated Press reported that Vice President JD Vance said in May, “We’re going to investigate it,” and that he and deputy White House chief of staff Stephen Miller were “trying to look at what the remedies are.”

Omar answered the same day: “I’m ok,” and “I will not be silenced.” She called the search “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” Her office said she “has done nothing wrong.”

Who benefited

No one has been charged, and the department has not said what it is looking for. What is on the record is the timing: the search came 22 days before the November 3 election in which Omar is on the ballot, and months after the vice president said in public that he was looking for a way to build a case against her.

Who wanted something

Vance said in May, “If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime,” and told a podcaster he and Miller were asking, “How do you go after her? How do you investigate her?” Omar has called the claims against her “disgusting lies,” and her office dismissed Vance’s as fabricated and defamatory.

Who lost out

Omar has not been charged with any crime, and the search of her home is now public three weeks before her election. She has no charge to answer in court and no public account of what investigators are looking for.

Why it matters

A search warrant is the most visible step a federal investigation can take, and this one was served on a sitting member of Congress weeks before she faces voters. Homeland Security Investigations, the agency that carried it out, handles immigration fraud, the accusation Vance has made against her in public.
