— White House gives Politico 48 hours to retract 3 stories or face 'consequences'.

The White House counsel told Politico to retract its reporting on chief of staff Susie Wiles, apologize to the president and scrub the stories from its archives, or face a review of its White House access and possible legal action.

What happened

On October 19, 2026, White House counsel Will Scharf wrote to Politico’s editor-in-chief, Jonathan Greenberger, about three stories on chief of staff Susie Wiles published October 15 and 16. One reported that Trump was considering replacing her, one that he “blew up” over that report, and one that she helped set up the Fox News interview of then-press secretary Katie Zacharia. The White House said all three were false.

Scharf demanded that Politico retract or correct them, issue “a prominent and public apology” to Trump and Wiles, and “remove the false reporting from your digital archives” within 48 hours. Otherwise, he wrote, the White House would conduct an “immediate review of Politico’s relationship with the White House” and consider “all other appropriate and available legal remedies.” A White House official told Axios that “all options are on the table.”

Politico’s lawyer, Theodore Boutrous Jr., replied on October 21 that Politico “categorically rejects” the charge that it knowingly published falsehoods. Politico corrected the third story, saying Wiles did not play a direct role in setting up the interview, and stood by the other two.

Who benefited

The White House, which put a news organization on notice that its access and legal exposure depend on what it publishes about the president’s staff. The demand to delete stories from an archive goes beyond a correction.

Who wanted something

The White House wanted the Wiles stories retracted and an apology to Trump. It said Politico had ignored on-the-record denials and text messages showing Zacharia, not Wiles, arranged the interview. Politico said it would “defend its journalism.”

Who lost out

Politico’s reporters, who were told their outlet’s relationship with the White House was under review over their stories. Politico is already one of three outlets suing over the September credential ban, which a judge blocked.

Why it matters

News outlets get stories wrong and correct them; Politico corrected one here. What changed is who sets the terms: the president’s lawyer setting a 48-hour deadline, with access and lawsuits as the penalty, for an outlet he already tried to ban.
